Although, reading between the lines, it’s unusual that that particular forum was finally hacked after 30 years of stability. Additionally, as a website developer managing small clients, hosting companies like GoDaddy have backups that occur every day, so based on that we can imagine that a bigger entity like NinjaTrader, would be working with a hosting company or a server system that has backups that occur every day. Additionally, the “hacking“ was unusual, particularly as to when it occurred, and who it was.
At any rate, while my reasoning is circumstantial, I’m sure they have a back up.
As a long time user and contributor of the old forum, huge bummer that all the info is gone. No offense to anyone, but the discussions here just aren’t the same, maybe it’s just my age but much prefer the older style bulletin boards compared to this modern discourse
A key fact: the old support forum was running on vBulletin, which has been end-of-life for 3+ years, and vBulletin gets auto-hacked very often by scripts, so possibly the “pull the plug” decision had to do with the desire not to have to deal with security in such an environment. I do wish they could have archived the content before it was gone. There’s always the Wayback Machine, when it’s working (currently it’s 503 status but it will get fixed I’m sure).
yeah maybe, but i suspect Ninja just didn’t want to do support from the forums anymore. They had some of the most helpful support people, especially I remember Chelsea going out of her way with helping me with some of my ninjascript and undocumented functions. Nowadays it’s just the ai chatbot.
This discourse forum style is also what Tradovate always had, before the Ninja acquisition, and I think it all comes down to cutting cost. Ninja did away was the Continuum connection because it cost them more than the Tradovate for live accounts, and we all suffer from daily disconnections now.
I suspect NT just makes too much money from prop firms. I remember pre covid Ninja was always so cautious about their language, they only called it ‘combines’ when it was only topstep and earn2trade, they would never promote the current gambling terms. But then they got a sweet taste of the revenue, which I’m sure dwarfs whatever they use to make from the old license sales.
For example Alpha Futures said they were paying over 1 million per month, and they weren’t even the biggest. So multiply it by all the prop firms now and my guess is Ninja is pulling in 100-200 million per year from just prop firms. So when Kraken bought Ninja for 1.5 billion, the number makes a lot more sense now, so part of it for the futures licenses and the rest a multiplier on the prop firm revenue. Commission from live trading must be tiny by comparison.
And so now with the most number of ninjatrader users ever, we’re left with this discourse with the least amount of activity. Discussions have all moved to walled up discords.
It’s okay, it is what it is, I’ll still keep using NinjaTrader and thus proving to them that their cost cutting aren’t measurably hurting
We appreciate the value the old forums provided over the years and understand that some users will miss that resource.
Due to that fact we maintained the legacy forums in read-only mode for a year after we moved to the new Discourse board. We have now made the decision to discontinue the legacy forum.
Moving forward, please use the Discourse board for community discussions and resources.
