Accidentally Closed a Chart in NinjaTrader? Here's how to Get it Back (Quick Fix)

If you’ve ever clicked the “X” on a chart tab instead of closing it properly through workspace…you already know how frustrating that is.

Especially when you had everything dialed-in: indicators, templates, layouts…gone in one click!

The good news?
That chart is not lost.

I put together a quick video that walks you through exactly how to recover it in just a couple of simple steps.

No guesswork. No rebuilding from scratch.

Watch it here:

This will save you a ton of time (and headaches) the next time it happens.

Nice!

I think its using saved versions at this location:
C:\Users\YourUser\Documents\NinjaTrader 8\workspaces\recovery

Simpler solution is to enable confirmation on window or tab close.
This way even if you accidentally click the X, you’ll get a confirmation dialog and can still cancel the closing of the window/tab.

Control Center > Settings > General > Preferences

That’s actually a great tip and honestly, that’s the ideal preventive step :+1:

If someone goes in and enables that setting ahead of time, it can absolutely save them from ever running into this issue.

The reality though… most users (especially newer ones) don’t even know that option exists, and they’re not digging through settings until after something goes wrong.

By the time they realize it, they’ve already clicked the X, the chart is gone, and now they’re trying to figure out how to recover everything they built.

That’s exactly where the video comes in - more of a “what to do when it’s already too late” solution.

But yeah, 100% agree - what you shared is solid preventive medicine, and definitely worth having in this thread :raising_hands:

I’ve made this mistake before, and there is a simple solution.

  1. Select the Workspaces Menu from the Control Center

  2. Highlight the Workspace with the now-missing chart, and click “Close.”

  3. When prompted to Save the workspace. DO NOT SAVE and proceed to close it, without saving.

  4. Reopen the Workspace and all charts with associated indicators will appear, as before your “X” mistake.

No video required.

That’s a solid workaround and you’re absolutely right, that method does bring everything back :+1:

The only thing I’d point out is that not everyone is comfortable taking that route, especially newer users. The idea of closing an entire workspace and choosing not to save can feel a bit risky if you’re not 100% sure what’s going to happen next.

That’s really where the video helps - it just walks through the process step-by-step so there’s no hesitation or second-guessing.

At the end of the day, both approaches get to the same result. Yours is a great quick fix for those who already understand how NinjaTrader handles workspace states, and the video just makes it a bit more accessible for everyone else.
